Del Norte County

California's northernmost coastal county, Del Norte is remote and sparsely populated. Stretching for 42 miles from the Oregon border south to Humboldt County, its coastline encompasses sandy beaches, coastal terraces, and dunes in the north; a broad coastal plain at the mouth of the Smith River; and in the south, steep bluffs and redwood forests. The county’s bountiful natural resources have been a mainstay of its economy since the early days of European settlement, when mining, timber harvesting, and fishing were major industries. Today those resources draw tourists, who visit Del Norte to explore its groves of magnificent redwoods and to fish for salmon and steelhead trout along the Klamath and Smith rivers.

The county's rugged coastline and lack of development limit the number of accessible recreation options. At Trees of Mystery, a tourist attraction along Highway 101 north of the town of Klamath, you can take an accessible gondola ride through the redwood canopy, visit the free museum of native artifacts, or take the Kingdom of Trees Trail. At Crescent City's Beach Front Park, you can stroll along the harbor on the Crescent City Coastal Trail, visit the North Coast Marine Mammal Center, and see one of the first lighthouses to be built in California.
